There are four steps to writing from a prompt.

  1. Pick a prompt
  2. Do a bit of research
  3. Write a story
  4. Submit it

Step One – Pick a prompt

We’ve prepared a whole bunch of prompts, in the hope that one of them will spark some creative thoughts.

Creatures: Check out the biology page for notes on these creatures. These prompts are intended to explore the world of Hu, without specifically focusing on our superpowered players.

  • Write about a sailor in Yalabya who who uses a giant turtle to tow his boat
  • Write about a dodo breeder in Asu who sells birds to the royal court
  • Write about a caravan in Alkebulan which is attacked by demon-ducks
  • Write about a miner in Hahnunah who befriends a wild mammoth
  • Write about the life of a working bonobo in Uropa

Citizens: These prompts are intended to look at the regular citizens whose lives interact with our superpowered players.

  • Write about a zealot who worships Dyer
  • Write about the challenges a nanny faces raising Crash as a toddler with superpowers (More info for this prompt on Crash’s page)
  • Write about a city ruler who surrendered their city to Radiant‘s army
  • Write about someone who’s banished from their village for catching the choke, and travels to find Wellspring to be cured
  • Write about someone who was part of the final expedition to find Root, but didn’t get to eat the last fruit because Slab did

Characters: These prompts are intended to explore some of the player’s backstories before S-Day.

  • Write about how Shadow was killed.
  • Write about Wellspring‘s relationship with her first husband.
  • Write about Mole’s adventures during the Gathering Era.
  • Write about Radiant’s spirt-walk.
  • Write about a nightmare that Bogeyman brought to life.

Conflict: These prompts are intended to explore how our players powers could be used in action sequences.

  • Write about Whipcrack on a battlefield
  • Write about Snowball raising a snow monster to attack a village
  • Write about Nailstorm getting into a bar fight
  • Write about Clay harvesting someone’s soul
  • Write about Meridian protecting his mother from an assassination attempt

The Core: These prompts are intended to explore the deeper backstory behind the Powerclash.

  • Write about an alien in the Core who loves Debutante contests like Ringmaster’s Powerclash
  • Write about the life story of one of the sponsor aliens who is providing superpowers for their human host
  • Write about a narrator accessing Ringmaster’s recordings and encountering humans for the first time

Step 2 – Do a bit of research

We don’t want to make this too onerous, but… we’re writing a shared universe, so please review the existing worldbuilding and incorporate relevant elements into your story.

We’re still at the beginning of this journey so the worldbuilding is currently very light touch. Think of it as a mostly blank canvas; your story could lay down details the might be adopted into the worldbuilding.

If you have any specific questions, please ask in the forum.

Step 3 – Write a story

Sounds easy, right? Just write the story!

  • There’s no minimum, or maximum wordcount – but it does influence how we ask you to submit your story.
  • You can work solo, or as part of a group – we can help you find a group if that would be useful.
  • Let us know when you start working on a story.
  • Let us know if you get stuck.
  • When you have a finished draft (or finished chapters), put your work through CritiqueCircle.
  • If you’re working on a longer piece – feel free to submit it as a work-in-progress
  • Remember – there’s no rush, so take your time and have fun!

Step 4 – Submit it

We recommend different channels for stories of different lengths.

  • Flash Fiction – Up to 1,000 words (but a complete story)
  • Fragment – Up to 1,000 words (but not a complete story)
  • Short Story – 1,000 to 7,500 words

For shorter pieces, please submit through the Story board in our forum.
(Guide to submitting stories in the forum)

  • Novelette – 7,500 to 17,500 words
  • Novella – 17,500 to 40,000 words
  • Novel – Over 40,000 words

For longer pieces, please post your story to Wattpad, RoyalRoad or AO3.
(Why do we recommend these hosts?)

When posting to a hosting site, please remember to tag your stories with the correct Creative Commons Licence.

And then post your link in the Story board in our forum.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
