Civilization

Geography | Biology | Civilization | Epidemic

This section needs to be developed by our world builders.
We have a whole planet to populate with interesting civilizations!

A few principles to start with:

  1. Civilizations are broadly comparable to Earth up until the 1400s, with any changes before that point driven by the variations in geography and biology
  2. The outbreak of the Choke caused most civilizations to collapse
  3. We get to design the new new civilizations that rose from the ashes
  4. The five continents have remained balanced (from a technology/military persepctive)
  5. There has been no intercontinental colonization on Hu (eg, no equivalent to Europe colonizing the Americas or Africa)
  6. Modern civilizations should feature steampunk technology – but no electric or petrol tech

Core features of civilization that develop over time:

  1. Agriculture – allows nomadic people to settle down
  2. Specialized livelihoods – agriculture allows more people to become skilled at specific jobs
  3. Forms of Government – law, formation of ‘the State’, taxation, public works, etc
  4. Social stratification – feudal, castes, classes, etc
  5. Economic systems – trading, standard units, currency, guilds, etc
  6. Literacy – spread of reading and writing
  7. Culture – laws, dress, architecture, social standards, traditions and so much more!

Cultures developed on Hu:

  1. Should feel recognizable, but with plenty of scope for creative reimagining.
  2. Should be crafted with love and respect – no lazy stereotypes!

So what do we mean by culture? The way of life of a society.

  1. Food – cooking, attitudes, traditions
  2. Clothes – function, fashion, jewelry
  3. Language
  4. Performing arts – music, dance, plays, circus, comedy
  5. Visual arts – crafts, sculpture, painting, architecture
  6. Literature – stories, scripture, poetry
  7. Sports and Games
  8. Holidays and Festivals
  9. Rituals and ceremonies
  10. Architecture
  11. Religions
  12. Values and Taboos
  13. Social structures

And then, for our specific world:

  • How were they changed by the choke?
