These are the stories that we most want to see! Who are our 125 players? How have they learned to use their powers? What happens when they clash with each other?

There are six easy steps to writing an original.

  1. Explore the website
  2. Pick a player character
  3. Pick a start date
  4. Do a bit of research
  5. Write a story
  6. Submit it

Step One – Explore the website

There’s a lot on the site to get you started – but there are also still a lot of under-construction pages. Here’s our recommended read list:

  • Read the legal section, so you understand how our Creative Commons approach works (there’s no point going any further if you’re not onboard with that philosophy)
  • Read our Welcome note and our Dream
  • Read through the sections on our World and the Timeline, so you understand the overall premise.
  • Sign up at our forum and start a thread to say hello in the Welcome Lobby
  • Check out the five teams.
  • Let us know which under-construction pages you would find most useful to see completed

Step Two – Pick a player character

You’ve got 125 players, plus even more civilians and aliens.
How you narrow that down is up to you.

Do you want to write about a specific type of power?
Are you interested in a specific setting?
Browse the World and Characters sections and see if anything sparks.

Let us know in the forum which characters you’re considering.

Step Three – Pick a start date

Check the Timelines section.
Which era does your story happen in?

  • Is it an origin story set during the Gathering Era, looking at how the character got their powers and learned to use them, or how they lived their life before S-Day?
  • Is it an S-Day story, looking at how a player reacted to the announcement of the contest?
  • Or is it a Powerclash Era story, looking at how one player defeated another and took their powers?

Step Four – Do a bit of research

We don’t want to make this too onerous, but… we’re writing a shared universe, so please review the existing worldbuilding and incorporate relevant elements into your story.

We’re still at the beginning of this journey so the worldbuilding is currently very light touch. Think of it as a mostly blank canvas; your story could lay down details the might be adopted into the worldbuilding.

If you have any specific questions, please ask in the forum.

Step Five – Write a story

Sounds easy, right? Just write the story!

  • There’s no minimum, or maximum wordcount – but it does influence how we ask you to submit your story.
  • You can work solo, or as part of a group – we can help you find a group if that would be useful.
  • Let us know when you start working on a story.
  • Let us know if you get stuck.
  • When you have a finished draft (or finished chapters), put your work through CritiqueCircle.
  • If you’re working on a longer piece – feel free to submit it as a work-in-progress
  • Remember – there’s no rush, so take your time and have fun!

Step Six – Submit it

We recommend different channels for stories of different lengths.

  • Flash Fiction – Up to 1,000 words (but a complete story)
  • Fragment – Up to 1,000 words (but not a complete story)
  • Short Story – 1,000 to 7,500 words

For shorter pieces, please submit through the Story board in our forum.
(Guide to submitting stories in the forum)

  • Novelette – 7,500 to 17,500 words
  • Novella – 17,500 to 40,000 words
  • Novel – Over 40,000 words

For longer pieces, please post your story to Wattpad, RoyalRoad or AO3.
(Why do we recommend these hosts?)

When posting to a hosting site, please remember to tag your stories with the correct Creative Commons Licence.

And then post your link in the Story board in our forum.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
